PhD Candidate Michael Shane Powers will give a talk on international expositions in the nineteenth century. Like today’s Olympic Games, worlds fairs were occasions for nations to display their talents under the auspices of cooperation and goodwill.  The talk will examine world’s fairs from London’s 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition, the 1884 New Orleans Worlds Fair, and the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition. Powers will discuss how such fairs shaped modernity, introduced new technologies, and reflected political pursuits in the Victorian Age.
